What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy helps you live your best life at home, at work – and everywhere else. It’s about being able to do the things you want and have to do – Royal College of Occupational Therapist

What OT Can Help With

An occupational therapist supports people of all ages in managing difficulties with everyday activities, also known as ‘occupations’. This can involve helping someone with learning at school, participating in work, playing sports, or managing daily tasks like washing dishes. The focus is always on enhancing wellbeing and enabling participation in meaningful activities.

It is a science-driven profession within health and social care, overseen and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Occupations are a vital part of life.

They include any activities we need, enjoy, or choose to do to support our physical and mental health, as well as our emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Occupations bring structure, purpose, and meaning to life, shaping our identity, connecting us with others, and fostering a sense of belonging. By engaging in occupations, we improve both our health and overall quality of life.

From birth, we take part in occupations, whether independently or with others. They are not limited to employment or daily routines. Occupations can involve self-care (like eating, sleeping, or washing), productive roles (such as working, studying, caregiving, or household tasks), and leisure (including sports, hobbies, or social activities).

How Our Occupational Therapy Works

Each treatment begins with a thorough assessment to understand your current capabilities and how these affect your daily life. Our therapists then create a personalised intervention plan aimed at improving your independence in essential activities — such as getting dressed, preparing meals, managing school tasks, or returning to work. We use a combination of physical strengthening, task-based training, adaptive equipment advice, and environmental modifications. For those with cognitive challenges, we include memory strategies, attention-building tasks, and problem-solving activities to enhance function. Therapy may be provided in our clinic or at home, depending on what best supports your recovery or independence.

OT for Children

At Private Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, our Occupational Therapy services are dedicated to helping children and young people overcome a wide range of challenges affecting their daily lives. We support those with sensory processing difficulties, dyspraxia, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, developmental delays, autism, ADHD, and DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder), as well as those experiencing handwriting and fine motor issues, visual perception difficulties, poor balance and coordination, social integration challenges, and difficulties with organisation and everyday self-care tasks like dressing, using cutlery, or going to the toilet. Whether these challenges arise from physical or mental health conditions, disability, or life changes, our therapists focus on improving your child’s ability to thrive in the three key areas of life: self-care, education and learning, and play and leisure. From supporting babies with feeding and bathing routines to helping school-age children with classroom participation and handwriting, and guiding teens toward independence in school, social life, or future work settings, our holistic and family-focused approach ensures every child receives the tools and confidence they need to succeed at every stage of development.
